Aosta Valley ( Italie)

By going through Chamonix and using the Mont Blanc tunnel, nothing is easier than to get to the Val d'Aoste. From Samoëns, Courmayeur is only about 1 hour 15 ( 80 km) and Aoste at 1 hour 30 (115 km).
Aosta besides visiting various monuments, offers a picturesque market (every day except Friday and Sunday-main markets on Tuesdays and Saturdays), where one can purchase Italian gastronomic specialties.

But the Aosta Valley is particularly interesting for its traditional folk festivals, which perpetuate a mountain culture and more particularly Valdostan.

🔴Saint-Ours Fair in Donnas. Also known as the “Wood Fair”, this event is a thousand-year-old event like the one in Aosta.Held on the penultimate Sunday of January, it is a showcase of the traditional handicrafts of the Aosta Valley focusing mainly on wood carving, copper work, wrought iron, hemp or wool weaving.
🔴Saint-Ours Fair in Aoste, January 30th and 31st. It is a huge popular kermesse entirely intended to celebrate, the craftsmanship of mountain people. More than a thousand exhibitors artists and artisans celebrate woodcarving and woodworking, wrought iron, leather work, cloth weaving, wool fabrics worked on old wooden crafts, lace, wicker objects, cooperage ... Folklore, music and gastronomic tastings complete the program of a huge popular festival that culminates in the night of 30 to 31 January with the «Veillà»: illuminations and very late street animations.
🔴Désalpage. For the Saint Michel (September 29) cows who have just spent the summer in the alpine pastures return to the valleys. The cattle return transhumance takes place every other year (even years) at a party on the last Sunday in September.
